At Woodlands School our students are digital citizens, meaning they use technology to aid in their learning. A wireless student network for internet access using student owned personal electronic devices is being provided at Woodlands School. The use of personal devices by students with the guidance of parents and teachers will assist in addressing individual student preferences and needs for personalized learning.
Students may bring in mobile devices at the invitation of their teacher and with the permission of their parents. Students are not required to bring in technology devices, this is on a voluntary basis. School owned devices will continue to be available for use at the school. The focus of this project is on student learning and places responsibility on students for appropriate use and behaviour. Parents/guardians are encouraged to discuss the learning opportunities, the possible risks with their son or daughter and to refer to our Admirable Use Policy.
Be assured that the content filtering that is normally used to filter inappropriate materials on the school’s internal network is also applied to the open access network.
As with any personal belonging that a student brings to school, the school cannot be responsible for electronic devices that are lost, stolen or damaged. The school will provide a secure place to store the device when it is not in use. It is the responsibility of the student to ensure it is left in the designated secure place.
It is an expectation that the device is only used by the student who has brought it. It may only be used for educational purposes and with the permission and supervision of the teacher. Use of these devices at school will be prohibited unless use is permitted and directly supervised by the teacher. Students will be required to have a general understanding of how to use their device. Technical support will not be provided on student owned devices.
Digital Citizenship at the CBE
Digital citizenship is about using technology and participating in digital environments. It is key to helping our students learn to use available technology responsibly in the classroom and beyond. Our school has a Digital Citizenship Plan that is updated annually, addressing how we work to build a community where we live and work together as digital citizens.
Visit the CBE website to learn more about how we support students to develop online safety skills and be good digital citizens.
Personal Mobile Devices
Student personal mobile devices are limited or restricted at all schools, unless required for health or medical needs, to support specialized learning needs, and for educational purposes. Learn more about our BYOD (bring your own device) rules.
Web Filtering & Social Media
Inappropriate or unsafe content may be blocked to provide a safe environment: some content is blocked for all users, and other content may be suitable for older students but not for younger ones. Student access to known social media platforms is blocked on school networks and school devices for all grade levels.
