Transition Project | Library to Learning Commons

Over the past 13 years, the Calgary Board of Education (CBE) has embraced the Learning Commons philosophy as a way to access high quality learning and teaching opportunities.

The Learning Commons model supports a learner-centered approach with a focus on active and collaborative engagement.

A Learning Commons is a place that promotes…..

  • personalization of learning, including hands-on learning tasks
  • knowledge engagement rather than knowledge consumption
  • a culture of inquiry and innovation
  • a dynamic physical environment that is both comfortable and functional
  • authentic learning opportunities for all students

Building a shared vision with staff, students and the larger school community is one of the first and most important steps in transforming a library into a learning commons. Parents, teachers, staff and students will have opportunities to share their input in the coming weeks. Families are encourage to watch for the display at parent-teacher conferences on November 23 & 24! Details will also be shared at the December 8th school council meeting.
